Pilates: 5 tips for Pilates Best Practice


Regular Pilates training does more than good. It keeps you physically young and mentally stimulated well into old age. The focus on your own movement requires that you are present in the moment – a great way to address yourself head-on. Pilates training is therefore not just a sport to move meaningfully but a possibility for you to perceive yourself holistically.

It is my deepest wish for you to experience ongoing and long-term fulfilment with your Pilates training. Because your Pilates training is so much more than just getting your body moving – it is breathing, awareness, living, learning about yourself, gaining experience and allowing yourself to grow.

On your Pilates journey I would like to give you my extraordinary Top 5 recommendations for experiencing long-term joy and success in your Pilates training:

1. Make your health your priority

That sounds obvious and common sense. And whilst you think that you’re the first person for whom health is a top priority, I want to ask you this: is it really?

Is the time for your workouts genuinely blocked in your calendar? Do you consider this blocked window of time as non-negotiable? Do you treat these planned training sessions just as importantly as your administrative, operational and business tasks? If not, I encourage you to remember that you have to take care of yourself before you can take care of others. Without the necessary attention to and care for your health, you cannot be the best version of yourself.

Take full responsibility for your health and well-being
Make your Pilates Mat Class a priority
Take the time for your Pilates practice as an integral part of your agenda
Consider your Pilates training sessions as non-negotiable as much as possible.

2. Its more fun together

Sign up foremost for a Pilates Mat Class, which is training on the mat in a small group. Due to the already established common ground – “we’re in this together” – makes the challenging work of Pilates training that much easier. This creates a sense of belonging with like-minded people who also want to change something in themselves.
Group lessons typically develop a unique group dynamic. This leads to a social network. Positive mental health is promoted by chatting, laughing and exchanging ideas and experiences with one another. Social interaction has been proven to protect against depression and other mental illnesses. By participating regularly in a Pilates training group your sense of belonging and community increases and will help you to stay true to your Pilates training.

3. Build new habits on existing habits

Increasing research shows that building a new habit on an already existing habit is most effective in the creation of new habits. Your everyday life is already filled with existing rituals that represent a certain rhythm of life. These rituals can be used as a good basis to build upon and are therefore ideally suited as “building blocks” for new habits.

For example: if you currently leave the office every day over lunch to clear your head or get a change of scenery, why not use this window of time to attend a Pilates Mat Class? The time frame is already given and you consciously use it for a Pilates training session. The skill lies in developing exactly those habits that are a suitable fit for your life both professionally and privately. Of course you are also wise to begin building the very habits that will offer you the greatest return on your time.

4. Pilates Titbit at Hand

Anyone who chooses Pilates Training is looking for change. Consider this – you are highly motivated when getting started with your Pilates Training. But after a short time, it can be difficult to stick with it. The challenges of being consistent with a Pilates training program are very real. However, your progress should not be derailed just because your life is busy and you can’t keep up with regular Pilates training.

How then should the mind convince the feeble body?

First, you can be sure that your life will always be busy and that things will sometimes get in the way of your training. But it’s not the end of the world and it doesn’t have to be everything or nothing. Because you can plan for such phases and in doing so…

Have a Backup-Plan aka Pilates Titbit. You didn’t make it to Pilates Mat Class, that’s too bad. But there is a good chance you still have 10 minutes. In these 10 minutes you’ll do your own Pilates. Your “Pilates Titbit (more about this topic in another post). Precisely for those occaisions when you have little time. It’s the consistency of training that’s key to getting you results.

Extra tip: ask your Pilates instructor for 2-3 “Go-To-Pilates Exercises” to have your Pilates Titbit ready at hand.

5. Remember Your Why

The discipline to pace yourself with small gains adds up to significant changes over months and years. However, it’s not merely the execution of Pilates training that motivates you. It’s something much deeper and more valuable than just a change in your physical state. Your Pilates training by far improves you as a person and gets you prepared for the essential things in your life.

To navigate your career, to be able to undertake strenuous hikes in the mountains, to be a top athlete with endurance, to have loads of energy for your family and to be physically healthy and ready for anything that life throws at you – these are all instances of the priorities we make.
